Mahia was born in Tauranga and grew up and educated in Mount Maunganui.
She travelled extensively and on returning to New Zealand, pursued a career in the travel industry. Working her way up to Director of Sales & Marketing for the Hyatt Hotel.  Whilst based in Auckland, and later in Tauranga, Mahia promoted Aotearoa to a major USA wholesaler for a campus abroad programme with emphasis on Maori culture and volcanology, and set up the USA Alumni Campus Abroad Programme, coordinating hotel accommodation, lectures, studies and activities.  As the programme was seasonal, Mahia gained a certificate in adult teaching and tutored rangatahi in tourism, retail sales and service and worked with the NZQA to develop standards in the industry.

Mahia was introduced to the health sector in 2010 when she was employed with Pirirakau Hauora as Kaumatua Activity Programme Coordinator.  She is committed to community health and coordinates the mirimiri, kaumatua activity programme and other visiting practitioner services at Te Oturu Oranga.
Favourite pasttimes of Mahia are reading, gardening and having a go at cooking new dishes.
