Te Huhunu Trust

In 1984 the kaumatua of Pirirakau expressed a desire to provide a legacy to the community.  This vision led to a meeting that approved a proposal to construct low cost, low maintenance kaumatua flats.  The ideal location for this project would be the three acre block of land which had been given over to the ownership of the Catholic Church.  This land had been previously used as a Convent School playground and had been lying idle since the Convent closed.

28th April 1986, after lengthy discussions and negotiations Bishop Gaines approved that the Land Change Deeds be returned to the Pirirakau Community and be administrated by a Charitable Trust made up of representatives from the four marae within Pirirakau community, today we have 11 trustees.

The name Te Huhunu was chosen by the Trust for the 3 acre block of land which was gifted back to the Pirirakau Community by the Catholic Church.  Te Huhunu was a spring located on the adjoining property owned by the Tuhakaraina whānau.

Te Huhunu Trust has built three kaumatua flats, established Pirirakau Kohanga Reo, and constructed the main building of Pirirakau Hauora, landscaped and constructed car parks.

Nau Mai Haere Mai

If you are thinking of enrolling your tamaiti in Pirirakau Kohanga Reo, here are a few things you need to know.

This Kohanga Reo is set up for our tamariki to learn Te Reo Maori, Tikanga, Karakia and Pirirakautanga in a whānau friendly environment.  Kohanga Reo requires commitment from all the whānau to make it a happy, healthy environment for our tamariki.

We encourage you to come and learn with the tamariki, you don’t have to know much to come and enjoy Kohanga.  Enthusiasm and Commitment make it easy to learn.

Nā tou rourou , nā tāku rourou ka ora ai te Kohanga Reo.

Korero Maori i nga wa katoa
It is important that only Maori is spoken by anyone at Kohanga at all times.  If you are unsure please ask.  The staff are more than willing to help.

‘Ko te Reo te mauri o te Mana Maori’

Any tamariki between the ages of 0-5years can be enrolled at Pirirakau Kohanga.  However, for them to be left at Kohanga on their own they must be 1yr of age, otherwise you need to come with them or send them with a caregiver.

Our Kohanga is fully licensed. A copy of our license is displayed on the wall.

Child/ren’s progress

All tamariki have a personal progress book where staff and/or parents who are here record what your child has been doing during the day. You are able to read this book whenever you like and discuss anything with the staff that has been written. Eg; achievements, things they excelled at/enjoyed/didn’t enjoy, participation etc. At the end of the year or if they leave you will get to keep this book. At the end of each term your child/ren will receive a report from the Kaiako.

All meals are provided

Free ECE

Pirirakau Kohanga Reo offers the 20 Free Hours of Childcare for 3 & 4 year olds.

Whānau Hui

Whānau Hui are every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 4.00pm at Kohanga. (unless the 2nd Tuesday is during the School Holidays) Please note that hui attendance is compulsory as it is the whānau that runs the kohanga. If you do not attend hui there is no one to run the kohanga.  If you miss 3 Hui in a year you may be required to meet with Management to discuss your commitment.

Kohanga operates 4 terms of the year, following the Primary School year. The only exception is the end of year Christmas holidays where we are only closed for 4 weeks not 6.
